Renovating the whole house at once is a big job, but knowing what to expect at each stage helps to make it easier.

Survey and Scope First

Before work can begin the builder will carry out a survey of the property to determine the structural make-up of the property and the current electrics, plumbing and insulation. This information will then be used to draw up a full project plan and highlight any aspects that require formal approval, such as requiring Building Regulations approval.

Trades Work in Order

All work must be carried out in the correct order. This is the standard method of work that all good builders adhere to. The structural work must be completed first, followed by the first fix of electrics and plumbing. After that the work can progress with the installation of the insulation and plastering. The second fix of finishing work can then be completed.

Plan Where You Will Live

Most families end up moving out of the house while it is being renovated. If this isn’t possible then be prepared for a long time of one room being completed at a time while the rest of the house is covered in dust.

Expect Decision Fatigue

So paint and all finish items will need to be chosen prior to work commencing in order to avoid delay. Batch your decisions early in the process in order to avoid your tradespeople waiting on you for decision making.

Local Projects Have Local Considerations

Older stone buildings such as those found in Winchcombe may require the use of lime-compatible materials and in some cases there may be conservation conditions which need to be checked prior to your being issued with a specification for your project.

Allow Time for Snagging

The last part of your home renovation is to go for a final walk round to find any parts of your home that have not been completed to a good enough standard to release your builder from his obligations to complete any items that have not been completed to your full satisfaction. This should take 2 weeks from completion to allow any required snagging to be completed.

Understand each stage and take the stress out of your whole home project.
